Concept of Hilot

Man is considered healthy or “at-ease” if his faculties (mind, emotion and body) are in harmony with the Universal Law. This harmony sets the phase for the balance and precise combinations of the Elements of the body (earth, water, fire and air). The unique combination of the four Elements varies according to man’s existing patterns and programs that are called genes. Furthermore, the unique combinations are also dependent on man’s lifestyle, culture and environment. This combination has its own individual limitations, and once limitations are violated, imbalances happen. The imbalance is called “dis-ease.”

Imbalances of elements of the body could be corrected by the introduction of changes through; biochemical, neuro-electrical, electro-magnetic and bio mechanical means.

What to Expect from a Balinese Massage

Balinese massage is usually performed on a soft mat on the floor, or on a massage couch. It can also be done with you seated in a chair, if, for medical reasons for example, this is more comfortable for you. Essential oils form an important part of a Balinese massage – smell is a very powerful stimulant triggering memory and other associations – the use of oils can be very therapeutic, and will stimulate your body’s circulation and lymphatic system.

Expect the therapist to use quite deep pressure during the massage, as they work on deep, knotted tissue and muscle damage. You therapist will also use long, gentle strokes and kneading to relieve tension and improve circulation in the muscles closer to the surface of the skin. At the end of a Balinese massage, the therapist is likely to pour some coconut or other scented oils onto your body. Sessions usually last about an hour.

Making of a Hilot

The training of Hilot Practitioners or the “manghihilot” involves learning the concepts and philosophy of traditional healing, instilling an individual valuing process and its relevance to Hilot Healing and understanding the body functions. The education of the “manghihilot” is holistic, -holistic involving the biological, social, behavioral and psychological aspects of life and living.

A good hilot practitioner would know the type of ailment his client is suffering from just by looking at him and sensing his energy. A good healer can tell if the elements in one’s body – fire, water, earth and air – are in harmony. Fire refers to the body’s electric impulses; water, the blood; the earth, bone and flesh; while air corresponds to the air that one breathes.

To correct the imbalance in the patient’s energy that leads to a distorted metabolism, a healer would have to give the patient a massage to create the desired biochemical reactions that helps the body heal itself.

Spotting a fake “hilot” should be easy. Anything that did not conform to the natural law would cause pain, so if one felt sore after a “hilot” massage then something was not right.

Breema Bodywork

In Breema bodywork, one person gives while the other receives. Sessions takes place on a padded floor, with practitioner and recipient comfortably dressed. The fully supported movements include firm yet gentle stretches, precise and gradual leans into the muscles, nurturing brushes and holds, and a wide variety of playfully rhythmic movements.

Body Comfortable – When we look at the body, not as something separate, but as an aspect of a unified whole, there is no place for discomfort.

No Extra – To express our true nature, nothing extra is needed.

Firmness and Gentleness – Real firmness is always gentle. Real gentleness is always firm. When we are present, we naturally manifest firmness and gentleness simultaneously.

Full Participation

The most natural way of moving and living is with full participation. Full Participation is possible when body, mind, and feeling are united in a common aim.

Mutual Support – The more our Being participates, the more we are able to support life and recognize that Existence supports us. Giving and receiving support take place simultaneously.

No judgment – The atmosphere of non judgmental gives us a taste of acceptance of ourselves as we are in the moment. When we come to the present, we are free from judgment.

Single Moment/Single Activity – Each moment is new, fresh, and totally alive. Each moment is an expression of our true nature, complete by itself.

No Hurry/No Pause – In the natural rhythm of life energy, there is no hurry and no pause.

No Force – When we let go of assumptions of separation, we let go of force.

Self-Breema Exercises – The Breema system includes a complete repertoire of Self-Breema exercises, which can be done your own body anywhere, at any time, in ordinary clothing. Many and varied, the movements include gentle stretches, rhythmic movements, and unique postures. Each exercise provides an ideal opportunity to apply and experience the Breema principles. Practicing Self-Breema is both nurturing and energizing, and supports physical and physiological flexibility and vitality, mental clarity, and emotional balance.

About to Give a Back Massage

Tell the person you are about to begin. Ask them to let you know if anything you are doing painful or uncomfortable. Place massage oil in a cupped hand. Warm it by rubbing it between your hands.

Spread the oil around. Do this across the person’s back with light strokes. Don’t forget the shoulders and neck area.

Make palm circles. Place one hand on the lower back and put your other hand over it. With arms extended, begin making small circles by going up the back and down again. Staying on one side of the spine, repeat this 2-3 times. The movement should come from the waist, rather than from the shoulders.

Steps for Back Massage

  • Place a pillow or cushion where the person’s chest will be.
  • Spread the sheet over to catch any excess oil.
  • Have the person prepare by loosening or removing their pants. They should do this so that the lower back can be reached. Ask them to take off their top as well. If privacy is a concern, step out of the room and have them wrap a towel around their chest (just underneath the arms) so that the ends are at the back.
  • Have them lie face down. The pillow should be underneath the breast bone.
  • Fold one of the towels and place it underneath the forehead. This will help to keep the person’s neck straight.
  • Fold one of the towels and place it underneath the ankles. This will support the person’s lower back. If the person is wearing pants, spread another towel over them and tuck the towel into the waistline. This will prevent the oil from staining them.

Foot Massages and Foot Massages Tips

Foot Massages use pressure techniques on the heel, arch, balls and toes.

Foot Massages Tips
  • Acupressure points, similar to reflexology, on the traditional body meridians taught to students of acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicines. Locate a school in your area for purchasing an acupressure foot chart.
  • Individuals suffering from arthritis or weak joint conditions in the hand are advised not to apply full pressure when performing a foot massage. If you suffer from such a condition, you may want to consider purchasing a massage tool to reduce discomfort while delivering a massage.

Tip Your Technician – Spa Etiquette for Men

A 15-20% tip is appropriate for your aesthetician or massage therapist. Remember that this person has given you an hour of their expertise!

Avoid Lotion before Waxing – Spa Etiquette for Men

Applying lotion or body creams before the wax will make it more difficult to remove strip wax. Skip the heavy moisturizers before a back or chest wax and the whole experience will be a little smoother. Don’t forget to let your waxing technician know if you are using and ingestible or topical skin medications as these can increase sensitivity to waxing.

Shower Before your Massage – Spa Etiquette for Men

Another reason to arrive early is to have time to take a shower before your treatment. You will want to have that clean, fresh feeling before you enter your treatment room, and your massage therapist will appreciate it as well!

Shave Before your Facial – Spa Etiquette for Men

To get the full benefits of a facial it is best to give your aesthetician full access to your face. A clean shave will allow for our entire face to be treated with the same care. Areas that are prone to irritation from razor burn and ingrown hairs are issues that your aesthetician can treat during your facial.

Arrive Early – Spa Etiquette for Men

It is best to arrive 20-30 minutes before your treatment. This gives you time to enjoy the facilities that might be available to you, as many spas have steam or fitness rooms for spa-goers to use freely before or after treatments. Naturally, after relaxing your muscles during a massage you won’t want to hit the fitness room where they will tighten back up, so arrive early to check out the exercise facilities or begin to unwind before your treatment in the relaxation room.
